Insurgent, the movie, and why the book is better

I love watch movies based on books I've read, though generally I always feel like... "the book is so much better!" The thing is, authors have hundreds pages to describe their characters, their motives, how they behave and why, the relationships between them while directors usually need to condense them in a couple of hours of running images. Screenplay writers definitely have hard times.

So, I'm not that naive to think that a movie should be fully faithful to the book. It's like in translations. In order to be faithful is sometimes necessary to divert a bit from the original as what really counts is the plot and message as a whole. And that's why I'm a bit annoyed about Insurgent.

Adoro vedere film tratti da romanzi che ho letto, anche se generalmente me ne esco con commenti tipo... "il libro è infinitamente meglio!". Il punto è che gli autori hanno centinaia di pagine per descrivere i loro personaggi, le loro motivazioni, come si comportano e perché, le relazioni che costruiscono tra loro, mentre i registi solitamente sono costretti a condensare il tutto in un paio d'ore di immagini animati. Decisamente gli sceneggiatori non hanno vita facile.

Questo per dire che non sono così ingenua da pensare che un film debba necessariamente riprodurre fedelmente il libro. Alla fine è come per le traduzioni. Per essere fedeli all'originale a volte è necessario distaccarsene perché alla fine ciò che conta è l'insieme di trama e messaggio. Ed è quello che un po' mi ha infastidito di Insurgent.

What's on TV?

When we moved to the UK we decided non to have a TV. We'd been thinking about it a long while still in Milan, but since we already had one, we didn't really want to get rid of it. After all, from time to time, some nice movie or show could be broadcast. Though most of the time, current TV show schedules are real rubbish, with the nicest and more interesting shows set late at night.

Eventually, once in England, we chose not to buy a TV and watch DVDs on our laptop, instead. Then, we discovered Netflix and ever since we've been catching up with all those movies and TV series we missed while in Italy. And there's a few really good. Here's my personal top 5.

Quando ci siamo trasferiti qui in UK abbiamo scelto di non avere la TV. Era una cosa a cui pensavamo già da tempo mentre eravamo in Italia, ma avendola già in casa, ci dispiaceva sbarazzarcene. Dopotutto, di tanto in tanto, qualche film o programma interessante lo trasmettevano. Anche se la maggior parte delle volte quello che si vede è spazzatura, mentre le cose davvero interessanti le passano a orari impossibili. Tipo alle 4 del mattino.

Così alla fine l'Inghilterra ha avuto ragione della tv, nel senso che abbiamo risparmiato i soldi per comprarla, e risparmiato anche il canone BBC, scegliendo di vedere film in DVD sul pc. E poi abbiamo scoperto Netflix, così ci siamo pure messi in pari con tutti quei film e quelle serie tv che, per un motivo o per l'altro, in Italia ci eravamo persi. E alcune serie sono davvero super. Ecco la mia personale top 5.

Film review: Maleficent

What if fairy tales as we know them were not exactly true? What if things had gone otherwise than we were told? What if fairy tales vilains had their reasons, too? Can't speak for Snow White evil queen or Cinderella's stepmother, they still appear to me the bad ones, but for sure Maleficent has been provoked.

E se le fiabe, così come le conosciamo, non fossero proprio vere? E se le cose fossero andate diversamente da come ci hanno raccontato? E se i cattivi delle fiabe avessero avuto le loro ragioni? Non posso parlare per la regina cattiva di Biancaneve o per la matrigna di Cenerentola, che continuo a ritenere piuttosto stronzette, ma certamente Malefica è stata provocata.
