5 destinations to visit again (and again, and again...)

If I were given the possibility to be paid for that, I’d be travelling 24/7. My dream would be to travel around the world for one year. Alas, I haven’t had that luck yet, and there are so many places I wish to see I don’t even know where to start from. Nevertheless, there are some I’d really like to visit again. So, inspired by Booked.netTop Destinations to Go There challenge here the five destinations I would visit again. Actually, I’d have more, but as I should stick to 5, I’ve cut out anything I’ve already published in this blog, so there won’t be doubles, I’ve cut out any Italian or British destination, so that I won’t be accused to be biased, and I won’t mention places I’ve been more than once, even though I know I’ll go again, such as Lyon or Paris. And here we go.
*
E quindi cominciamo.

1. Camargue
First of all, I love France and I think I’ve already told you that. To me, wherever in France it’s worth visiting again and again. Though Provence, and Camargue, is probably the region I would go immediately, with no hesitation. Particularly, I’d go back to Arles. Camargue is definitely intriguing. I have no doubt about that. Its ancient Roman heritage mixing up with true southern French style and gypsy culture, its token animals, white horses, black bulls and pink flamingos. Its colours, the bright blue of the sky, the foggy white of pastis and the blinding one of saltpit, the faded purple and green and turquoise of shutters. And its scent of basil, sage, maritime pines and lavender brought about by the Mistral. White and blush wines, and bouillabaisse and rouille sauce. For five days I believed I was living in a Van Gogh painting. Camargue is a paradise for all five senses.

1. Camargue
Pero’, ecco, dovessi partire domani, senza esitazioni tornerei in Provenza e Camargue. E in particolare tornerei ad Arles. La Camargue è decisamente intrigante. Nessun dubbio in proposito.

2. New York
I know, it’s kind of obvious, but the thing is that you can’t have enough of New York. We went in 2010 and we planned the trip quite late. Going to the Big Apple is the easiest thing and the most difficult at the same time. It’s not cheap. And it’s a long, long flight. But I’ve always had this thing for New York. I love pictures of New York. I love books and movies and TV series set in New York. I’d probably live in New York despite the fact I’m deeply European-minded. And so there we were, strolling in Central Park and walking under the big arch in Washington Square, the one where Harry and Sally parted once arrived in the city. Though the first thing we did once we had left our luggage at the hotel was to go downtown and check out the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park. That was the moment I felt we actually were in NYC.

2. New York
Adoro i libri ambientati a New York, i film e le serie TV ambientati a New York. E probabilmente ci vivrei anche, pur essendo fortemente legata all’Europa.

3. Maine
From our 2010 US journey I only have wonderful memories. There may not be the architectural and historical richness we have in Europe but still the States are fascinating. Of all the places along the North East coast we went to, I’d definitely go back to Maine. This might sound bold, but I think you won’t understand the definition of “lovely” until you get to Maine and have a glimpse of those woods and rivers and trailers resting there, fishers and huntsmen. And then white beaches and wooden piers sticking out from the land to the ocean, and white-and-red striped lighthouses. A plus: you can have lobster for a few bucks and they’re delicious. The only US state I actually enjoyed local food.

3. Maine

4. Barcelona
We went to Barcelona in mid-November 2008. I was having a hard time at work, at some point I started spending in the office almost 12 hours a day and often allowing only 5 minutes for lunch, standing up only to stop at the toilet. MyFairEngineer wasn’t getting along better. Bottom line: we did need a break somewhere else than Milan or Italy, possibly somewhere warmer and sunnier. So we went, and we only had a rough idea of what was there to see as we had had barely time to read some travel blogposts and nothing more. We didn’t even have a travel guide. We knew we wanted to visit the Sagrada Familia and some other Gaudi landmarks such as the Pedrera, but mostly of what we saw we discovered there. Like the Rambla del Mar, the Barrio Gotico or the Parque Guell. While we got on Tibidabo hill just because we had seen the church from the city.
Eventually, after that trip, I read Vasquez Montalban and Zafon and such descriptions relived images to my mind and made me fall in love with this city again. That’s why I’d like to see Barcelona once more. And this time I would go prepared.

4. Barcellona
A Barcellona ci siamo stati a metà novembre 2008.

5. Greece
When I was a kid I used to watch this Japanese cartoon set at the time of Greek gods. Years after that, at school, I found myself working on a paper about Ancient Greece and studied Greek and classical architecture. My dream was to go to Athens and see the Parthenon and all those beauties I had read about on my schoolbooks. Curiously, at a time when all my peers used to spend their summer in Santorini or Mykonos, I went elsewhere and only in 2011 I finally landed in Rhodes. And once you taste Greece, you want more. Because there’s everything: millennial culture and history, wild nature, crystal cyan blue sea (oh, that sea!) and tasty food. I wouldn’t mind going back to Rhodes (I fell in love with Lindos), but there are so many islands to explore it’s only a matter of choosing the next one.

5. Grecia

At this point I should nominate 5 bloggers to do the same I did. I don't know many bloggers, though, and I don't know who would be pleased by the nomination or not. Therefore I nominate anyone's reading this post and fancy to share their 5 top destinations. I'd be so curious to read others' travel experiences, so if you will write yours somewhere, please link your post in the comments.
