The other Ville Lumière

The ritual is always the same. Arrival, luggage abandoned somewhere and quickly heading to the old city, where I'll have a crêpe à porter at some brasserie in rue Saint-Jean. I don't know whether they're the best in the city, most probably they are not, but the surroundings are so incredibly beautiful the taste of my crêpe au sucre never lets me down. This is how I've liked Lyon to welcome me for years. A constant renewal of love.

If I were to choose a city where to move  to, right now, I'd have no doubt. For years, Lyon is the only city I've thought about when thinking of living abroad. Partly because I have a kind of second family over there, and one of my best friends in the world, partly because I spent there a lot of time, I've strolled around both with friends and all by myself so often I don't even need a city map anymore. I can close my eyes and just be there. I know my favourite spots, my favourite places and my favourite shops. Well, things change, the shops might have closed or changed premises since my last visit, but my spots haven't changed. And my favourite one is the Vieux Lyon.

The View Lyon is the city's oldest district, a bunch of pastel Renaissance buildings, cobblestone alleys, gothic churches all clutched at the foot of Fourvière hill overlooking the Saone and the newest districts on the other side of the river. The Vieux Lyon is spellbinding. It's the first place I want to get to when I arrive, and possibly the last I want to see before leaving. I think that's the mixture of old French buildings, with their old wooden high ceilings you can get a glimpse of from those wide windows, new and old shops and brasseries and restaurants, the crowd of tourists and locals, the dark, emerald green of the hill's trees and that snow white Basilique de Fourvière up there on the top, overlooking the whole city.
*
Conosco i miei angoli preferiti, i locali, i negozi.

Fourvière is the place where Lyonnais have always been praying the Virgin Mary, where they made a vow, asking her intervention to spare the city from 16th century plague. Then, on the 8th of December 1952, as they were preparing to celebrate the installation of a statue of the Virgin Mary as renewal of their vow, a violent storm broke and the event was cancelled. At dusk, though, the weather started improving and all the Lyonnais spontaneously put candles on their window sills, lighting up the city, flooding in the streets and guiding the religious authorities to the Chapel. Ever since the 8th of December is the Festival of Lights with all kind of lighting installations and the old usual poetic candles on window sills.

This year the Festival starts on the 4th of December and will end on the 8th and I really wish I could be there. Unfortunately I can't, but if you're looking for a last minute destination this is the place you'll want to be this week. And since installations light up after dark, here's where to go at daylight.

Cathédral de Saint Jean, Vieux Lyon
This is the seat of the Archbishop of Lyon. I love going there because of this incredible working 14th century astronomical clock (check the timetables to watch it come to life).

Musée Gallo-Romaine and Basilique de Fourvière
The old Roman ruins of the Ancient Théatre of Fourvière is where I was taught French swearwords when I was 17. It's still one of my favourite spots to have a seat and rest after climbing to the top of the hill (la colline qui prie). Notre-Dame de Fourvière is only a few minutes walk away.

Notre-Dame de Fourvière è solo a pochi minuti a piedi.

Parc de la Tête d'Or
It's a big park on the East side of the city, across the Rhone. I think I still haven't visited the whole of it. It's huge. If you have kids, it is the must-go place as there are carrousels, Guignol Theatre (Guignol is Lyon's traditional hand puppet character) and the zoo.
*
Parc de la Tête d'Or

On Sunday morning it is the place to do your food shopping. Fruits and vegetables, seafood, oysters, breads and cakes. And roast chicken. I think the best roast chicken I've ever had is from this market. On the other side of the Saone, close to Vieux Lyon, there's the market of local artists, while if you walk out of the market towards the Croix Rousse you'll meet the bouquinistes, as Paris's ones but less tourist.

The painted facades
Pay attention while you walk around, as you may be mistaken. Lyon blind facades are often covered with trompe-l'oeil paintings. They are almost everywhere around the city and represent the most oddly assorted things.
*

I could go on revealing all the places that I love in this city, but that would take an awful amount of time and posts and photos. My advice is to go and discover this beauty It's absolutely worth it!
*
