Insurgent, the movie, and why the book is better

I love watch movies based on books I've read, though generally I always feel like... "the book is so much better!" The thing is, authors have hundreds pages to describe their characters, their motives, how they behave and why, the relationships between them while directors usually need to condense them in a couple of hours of running images. Screenplay writers definitely have hard times.

So, I'm not that naive to think that a movie should be fully faithful to the book. It's like in translations. In order to be faithful is sometimes necessary to divert a bit from the original as what really counts is the plot and message as a whole. And that's why I'm a bit annoyed about Insurgent.

Adoro vedere film tratti da romanzi che ho letto, anche se generalmente me ne esco con commenti tipo... "il libro è infinitamente meglio!". Il punto è che gli autori hanno centinaia di pagine per descrivere i loro personaggi, le loro motivazioni, come si comportano e perché, le relazioni che costruiscono tra loro, mentre i registi solitamente sono costretti a condensare il tutto in un paio d'ore di immagini animati. Decisamente gli sceneggiatori non hanno vita facile.

Questo per dire che non sono così ingenua da pensare che un film debba necessariamente riprodurre fedelmente il libro. Alla fine è come per le traduzioni. Per essere fedeli all'originale a volte è necessario distaccarsene perché alla fine ciò che conta è l'insieme di trama e messaggio. Ed è quello che un po' mi ha infastidito di Insurgent.

Muffins fancying themselves as a bread

Desserts and sweet treats are not exactly my thing and cakes I like are very few. Especially in this country where they are almost always covered in thick layers of exceedingly sugary frosting. So it was a nice surprise when I had a taste of banana bread in this cafeteria we discovered recently - the ultimate place to have a drinkable espresso in Reading.

It was a nice surprise because it wasn't too sweet, it wasn't too heavy on cinnamon, which I hate, but it had a character. So I decided I had to try the recipe for myself and since I had a couple of bananas on the verge of suicide, the skin blacking, I thought it was finally time to give this banana bread a go. I bought all the missing ingredients, went home and realized... I had forgotten to buy a loaf tin. So, instead of a bread, I used the same ingredients to make banana muffins instead.

Non sono mai stata particolarmente golosa di dolci e sono poche le torte che mi piacciono. Soprattutto qui in Albione dove sono tendenzialmente sempre coperte da spessi strati di stucchevolissimo frosting. Così è stata decisamente una bella sorpresa il banana bread assaggiato in questa caffetteria che abbiamo scoperto recentemente - forse il solo posto che prepara un espresso bevibile qui a Reading.

Bella sorpresa perché non troppo dolce, non troppo carico di cannella, che odio, ma con carattere. Così ho deciso che dovevo provare la ricetta a casa e visto che avevo un paio di banane sull'orlo del suicidio, la buccia ormai quasi completamente nera, ho pensato fosse la buona occasione per cimentarmi nel banana bread. Ho quindi comprato gli ingredienti mancanti e una volta a casa ho realizzato che... non avevo comprato lo stampo da plum cake. Così alla fine ho fatto dei muffin.

Book review: Divergent trilogy

"People who get this kind of results are..." She looks over her shoulder like she expects someone to appear behind her. "...are called... Divergent."

"Le persone che ottengono questo tipo di risultato sono..." Si guarda alle spalle come se temesse di veder comparire qualcuno dietro di sé. "...sono chiamate... Divergenti".

Freezing books

There's an old Friends' episode where Rachel discovers a copy of The Shining in Joey's freezer and when she asks him for explanations he reveals that he puts it in there when it started being too scary, with Jack stumbling around the hotel corridors carrying the axe. Later in the episode, challenged by Rachel to read something other than The Shining, Joey's engages with Little Women, but when Beth gets sick... he hides the book in the freezer.

C'è un vecchio episodio di Friends in cui Rachel scopre una copia di Shining nel freezer di Joey e quando gli chiede spiegazioni lui le rivela che nasconde il libro nel freezer quando comincia a diventare troppo pauroso, con Jack che si trascina nei corridoi dell'hotel brandendo l'ascia. Più tardi, incalzato da Rachel a leggere qualcosa di diverso da Shining, Joey inizia Piccole Donne, ma quando Beth si ammala... nasconde il libro nel freezer.

Signori, il momento è solenne. Rullo di tamburi... ho preso un bonus. Giovedì mattina mi sono ritrovata per le mani una bella busta bianca e dentro questa bella busta bianca c'era una bella lettera firmata dal mio capo, con i complimenti per il buon lavoro svolto lo scorso anno e, soprattutto, l'ammontare in sterline di tale riconoscimento. E ancora una volta non riesco a non fare confronti con la situazione lavorativa nella nostra repubblica democratica fondata (una volta) sul lavoro.
