First impression you have
when you get in Camden Town is you've been suddenly teleported in a
kind of freak world where everything's possible. Where else can you
find giant shoes or planes hanging on front of buildings?

La prima impressione che si ha
arrivando a Camden Town è di essere stati improvvisamente
catapultati in una specie di universo freak dove qualunque cosa è
possibile. Dove altro puoi trovare, altrimenti, scarpe giganti e
aeroplani appesi sulle facciate degli edifici?
You can feel that, really,
every time you walk down Camden High Street and see all those shops
selling t-shirts, shoes, music, junks, fashion and the most bizarre
items. And along with shops, come the markets, popping up from
everywhere.

Situata a qualche chilometro a nord di
Westminster, sul Regent's canal, Camden Town era una volta un
quartiere residenziale. Poi, a partire dagli anni Settanta, è in
qualche modo diventato il cuore della cultura alternativa londinese.
Dopotutto, questo era anche il regno di Amy Winehouse.
Lo si può percepire, davvero, ogni
volta che si cammina lungo Camden High Street e si vedono tutti quei
negozi che espongono magliette, scarpe, musica, cianfrusaglie di ogni
tipo, abiti e accessori e gli oggetti più strani. E, insieme ai
negozi, ci sono i mercati che spuntano un po' ovunque.
Camden Market started in
1974 as a small weekly crafts market operating every Sunday near
Camden Lock and over the following fourty years it has become a huge
complex of stalls and fixed shops, most of them operating whole week,
spread all around Camden Town tube station. Along Regent's canal and
inside the historic former Pickford stables are the two main section.
This is one of my
favourite places in London since the very first time I went there and
I sat on a Seventies furry violet armachair displayed in a
bric-à-brac shop. That's where MyFairEngineer and I found three
second-hand Harry Potter's novels, where he bought his Industrial
Doctor Marten's and I bought one of my weirdest piece of clothing.
That's where I most like to get lost, taking pictures of everything I
see (which is not always a good idea since in some stalls photos
aren't allowed) and taking mental notes of what, someday, I will want
to buy.

Il primo Camden Market nacque nel 1974
come mercatino domenicale dell'artigianato e nel corso dei successivi
quarant'anni è diventato un enorme complesso di bancarelle e negozi
fissi, molti dei quali aperti ormai tutta la settimana, sparsi
tutt'intorno alla fermata della metropolitana di Camden Town. Lungo
il Regent's canal e all'interno degli storici ex padiglioni della
Pickford si trovano le due sezioni principali.
Questo è uno dei miei posti preferiti
di Londra fin dalla prima volta che ci ho messo piede e mi sono
seduta su una poltrona anni Settanta, viola e di peluche, esposta in
un negozio di bric-à-brac. Qui è dove l'Ingegnere si è comprato le
sue Doctor Marten's Industrial e dove io mi sono presa uno dei più
strani capi d'abbigliamento che ho mai indossato. Qui è dove più
che altrove mi piace perdermi, facendo foto di tutto ciò che vedo
(che non è una buona idea dal momento che in alcune bancarelle le
foto non sono permesse) e prendendo mentalmente nota di ciò che,
prima o poi, mi piacerebbe comprare.
And, then, there's the
food. You can't enter Camden Lock Market or the Stables without
smelling it. Currys, soy sauce, stir fried vegetables and prawns,
chicken, ground coffee, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Italian or
Lebanese specialties... here's plenty of people cooking, claiming
your attention to their wonderful, flavoury dishes. It is impossible
to starve. If you get hungry, you only have to choose what you fancy
most.

E poi c'è il cibo. È impossibile
entrare nel Camden Lock Market o negli Stables senza sentirne
l'odore. Curry, salsa di soia, verdure e gamberetti saltati in
padella, pollo, caffè macinato, specialità indiane, cinesi,
giapponesi, thai, italiane, libanesi... qui c'è sempre un sacco di
gente che cucina e richiama la tua attenzione sui propri fantastici
piatti. È impossibile morire di fame. Al minimo languorino, non hai
che da scegliere quello che ti va di più in quel momento.
Camden Town is a place where I'm always
happy to go back. I'm already looking forward to.

Camden Town è un luogo dove sono
sempre felice di tornare. E non vedo di nuovo l'ora.

Tips
Public transport: the
nearest tube station is Camden Town, on Northern Line, but during the
weekend it's always crowded. However, there are a lot of buses going
there. And from the bus, sitting on top deck, you can enjoy London.
Planning the visit: during
the weekend there's always a lot of people, especially on Sundays. If
you don't love the crowd, then go in the morning as the markets are
usually less crowded before lunch.
Buying: it's up to you and
to what you're looking for. Here's everything, from vintage to
cyber-punk clothing, second-hand books and discs, toys, ecofriendly
and recycled crafts. Just bear in mind that many stalls display the
same things (so do compare prices) and many sellers expect you to
haggle. So, don't be afraid to ask for a lower price.

Suggerimenti
Trasporto pubblico: la fermata della
metropolitana più vicina è Camden Town, sulla Northern Line, ma
durante il fine settimana è sempre iper affollata. Tuttavia, ci sono
moltissimi autobus che arrivano lì. E dal secondo piano di un
autobus, ci si può godere Londra.
Pianficare la visita: nel weekend c'è
sempre moltissima gente, soprattutto la Domenica. Se non amate la
folla, quindi, andate di mattina. I mercati sono infatti meno
affollati prima di pranzo.
Comprare: dipende molto da voi e da
quello che cercate perché qui si trova di tutto, dall'abbigliamento
vintage a quello cyber-punk, libri e vinili di seconda mano,
giocattoli, oggetti artigianali ecofriendly e di riciclo. Solo,
tenete a mente che molte bancarelle espongono le stesse cose (quindi,
confrontate i prezzi) e che molti venditori si aspettano di
mercanteggiare. Quindi non abbiate paura di tirare sul prezzo.
