Sometimes I wonder whether, if I'd been the one that went for coffee and not Lesley May, my life would have been much less interesting and certainly much less dangerous. Could it have been anyone, or was it destiny? When I'm considering this I find it helpful to quote the wisdom of my father, who once told me, 'Who knows why the fuck anything happens?'

Autumn strolling in London: a photopost
Apparently it's Indian summer and temperatures are quite nice and warm. And it's sunny. Well, quite. Yesterday morning I woke up because of the downpour outside my window, but on Saturday it was so pleasant, albeit English weather. Cloudy in the morning, bright and warm by noon. Can't believe it was the 1st of November. We went to London and strolled around all day, met some friends for lunch and on the go again, until dark. Here's the snaps of a perfect day.

You’ll find what you want in the Portobello road
The first time I went to London I was 20 (don't do the math, it was 2000!) and the city welcomed me with a guy puking on some lady's coat just in front of my eyes (a bit of Linda Blair in The Exorcist, you know?), right before getting off the tube. It was 11 pm, our plane had had a damn 3-hour delay and I was exhausted. But how wonderful, the following morning, catch a red double decker and explore, for the first time, the magic mess of Portobello Road .

Just a walk
The last Tuesday we went to London to attend The Sleeping Beauty at the Royal Opera House (amazing performance, btw!). We arrived early and we had a few spare hours before the beginning of the ballet, so we walked.

On the wrong side
Truth is: if it had been completely up to me, in this moment I would probably be in Lyon with my friend Julia, sitting outdoor in front of the Saône even if it were chilly, drinking Chardonnay, eating oysters and rolling my Rs. Because, let's be totally honest, I, Alessandra, would have moved to France rather than to England. No offence, British people, don't take it personally.

When I first set a step into Royal Opera House
Last
Thursday I finally stepped into the Royal Opera House for the first time. On
stage: Giselle.
That's
funny. I spent 34 years of my life in Milan and
I've been to Teatro alla Scala only once, whilst I've been here for less than
five months and I've already attended a Covent Garden
ballet. And I'm going again in a couple of months, when maybe there won't be
downpours or TFL strikes. This time, they were. And we happily made our way
from Paddington station to the theatre by foot. I would have never missed the
performance. And once there, I know I would have never missed the theatre
itself.

È curioso. Ho

Let's talk about cliches
Ehi! It's been already four months since I moved here! Time flew, indeed! And I'm quite proud I haven't changed myself into the horrible Italian-living-in-UK cliche, always complaining about food, and weather, and coffee, and houses, and so on. Thinking about it, Italians do complain a lot, sometimes.
To be honest, apart from houses – that's a subject I will come back later on – there's not so much to complain about. What I mean is that we have a lot of prejudices about overseas, both positive and negative, and sometimes we stick to them even if we are proven they're quite incorrect. Of course, stereotypes usually come from reality, but that doesn't mean they're always true.
*

Have you ever been in Camden Town?
First impression you have
when you get in Camden Town is you've been suddenly teleported in a
kind of freak world where everything's possible. Where else can you
find giant shoes or planes hanging on front of buildings?

Postcards from London
And finally I got back there. Took my train early in the morning and got back home late at night, enjoying a whole day wandering London. A Christmas-dressed London. That's beautiful. Magic.

Autumn in London
Autumn's arrived, it's on the news. Chilly, windy, stormy sometimes. Saint Jude hit Britain a couple of weeks ago. Then Halloween and last week, on the 5th of November, the Bonfire Night. Which meant a whole week of fireworks (nice, at first, annoying after a while).
