Sorry, we're closed - Chiuso per ferie

Busy working period means no time to plan and write in advance. And since I'm travelling for a week of vacation, no post for a couple of weeks. I promise, though, I'll be back with plenty of pictures and stories about my trip. Plus, a couple of new book reviews ready to be typed. So... stay tuned!
*

The magical mystery of Stonehenge

Some places are simply iconic. You know them even before having been there, you've seen pictures, heard stories and legends, you've grown keen on seeing them for real. Stonehenge is one of those places, at least to me. I mean, at some point at school they teach you that there's a place in Southern England where some real ancient dudes took huge heavy stones and put them into a circle and despite all the hypothesis nobody can really explain why they did that. Kind of mind-blowing, right? So, of course, when you find yourself living at an hour driving from Stonehenge, well...
*

The other Ville Lumière

The ritual is always the same. Arrival, luggage abandoned somewhere and quickly heading to the old city, where I'll have a crêpe à porter at some brasserie in rue Saint-Jean. I don't know whether they're the best in the city, most probably they are not, but the surroundings are so incredibly beautiful the taste of my crêpe au sucre never lets me down. This is how I've liked Lyon to welcome me for years. A constant renewal of love.

5 destinations to visit again (and again, and again...)

If I were given the possibility to be paid for that, I’d be travelling 24/7. My dream would be to travel around the world for one year. Alas, I haven’t had that luck yet, and there are so many places I wish to see I don’t even know where to start from. Nevertheless, there are some I’d really like to visit again. So, inspired by Booked.netTop Destinations to Go There challenge here the five destinations I would visit again. Actually, I’d have more, but as I should stick to 5, I’ve cut out anything I’ve already published in this blog, so there won’t be doubles, I’ve cut out any Italian or British destination, so that I won’t be accused to be biased, and I won’t mention places I’ve been more than once, even though I know I’ll go again, such as Lyon or Paris. And here we go.
*
E quindi cominciamo.

Sailing to Gozo and Comino

Snapshots from a sailing week: getting seasick after barely two hours of navigation, nearly shredding the jib sail while tacking, destroying my flip flops, having showers en plein air standing on the back of the boat, trying to “save” a lifebuoy flown overboard and drifting away and nearly drown in the attempt, counting the stars at night, playing cards and riddles and singing and giggling with the rest of the crew, having spritz and crisps before dinner, sunbathing on the deckhouse, swimming among dozens of fishes and, of course, enjoying beautiful bays and landscapes along Gozo and Comino coasts.
*

The Knights' island

When it came to pick our holiday destination, we knew only a couple of things for sure: we wanted to be by the Mediterranean sea, we wanted hot temperatures and we wanted art and history along with blue water. Malta seemed the right choice and definitely it has been so, plenty of places to visit, activities to do, fascinating architectures and wild, rugged nature. Bottom line: I've taken something like 500 pictures! Hard to select them, but here it is my first photo-post dedicated to the Malta island and the beautiful, never-to-miss locations you can discover there.

The secret charme of Malta

How would be Sicily like if it were part of the United Kingdom instead of Italy? Well, go to Malta and you’ll have the answer.
*
Come sarebbe la Sicilia se fosse britannica anziché italiana? Be', andate a Malta e avrete la risposta.

Coming soon!

Finally time for holidays! I've been looking for them for all summer and finally it's my turn. Therefore, no post this week. But I'll make up for that with new, exciting reportage from my week away. And guess where I've gone to?
*

Discovering UK: Arundel Castle

“The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain”, as Audrey Hepburn used to sing. I don’t know about Spain, but the rain in England stays mainly when you're up to going for a nice outing somewhere. I shouldn’t complain, I know. After all, the bank holiday weekend started with two very nice days (here are the shots: first daysecond day). The problem is that we had to pay a high interest rate on the third one. We woke up, it was raining. We had breakfast, it was raining. We left the Airbnb, it was raining. We arrived at Arundel, it was… raining, of course. And it was cold. On the 25th of August. While on Facebook friends posted photo galleries of Sicilian, sunny beaches and blue sea… Anyway. It was the perfect weather for visit to a medieval castle.
*
“In Inghilterra piove sempre” è uno sciocco pregiudizio. Comunque. Clima perfetto per visitare un castello medievale.

Postcards from Chichester

When I was 16 my class went to Chichester for two weeks, while a bunch of my classmates and I stayed in Milan. I've never complained about it, it was my choice as I would go to Dublin with my best friend during the summer, but somehow I was curious about the city. And since it's by the sea, it's were we spent our first day of last bank holiday weekend
*

Postcards from West Wittering

A few weeks ago I wrote about how much I've been craving for the Mediterranean sea. Well, I'm still waiting for that, but couldn't wait any longer for seeing a beach and sailing boats and seagulls and everything. That's why, on the bank holiday weekend, we went South and spent a couple of days in Chichester area. And that's how we discovered West Wittering.
*
E abbiamo scoperto West Wittering.

I ♥ Palermo!

I want the sea. I'm craving for sea. But not just any sea, of course not. I could go to Brighton if I'd be happy with any sea. No, I want my sea, the Mare Nostrum, the Mediterranean, the most beautiful sea in the world. And most of all, I'd like to be in Palermo. I had the chance, years ago, to get to know Palermo and Sicily, and I've been there many times. And I always wish to return there. Because Palermo is... well, a lot of things.
*
E sempre desidero tornare. Perché Palermo è... un sacco di cose.

Oxford, where spires dream

Old and young, quiet and lively, undoubtedly English and definitely international. Tourism and everyday life. Academics and workers. Whether you go to Oxford for a couple of hours or for a few days, you get this feeling of palpable opposites merging together. That's quite unavoidable. And that's for sure its charm.
*
Vecchia e giovane, quieta e vivace, indubbiamente inglese e decisamente internazionale. E ancora, turismo e vita di tutti i giorni. Accademici e operai.

Discovering UK: Windsor Castle

The 11th of May was a cloudy and rain-menacing Sunday, and it just fit between two sunny weekends. Of course, my parents came over just in time to enjoy the worst of the typical English weather. Forget what I wrote about cliches a few months ago, this is May and usually Milan is blossoming and wonderful this time of the year. Therefore if the British weather in May is crappy, I will complain.
Anyway. Could rain stop us from enjoying what Britain has to offer? Of course not. And there we were, a party of four equipped with umbrellas and reflex, heading to Windsor Castle.
*

You’ll find what you want in the Portobello road

The first time I went to London I was 20 (don't do the math, it was 2000!) and the city welcomed me with a guy puking on some lady's coat just in front of my eyes (a bit of Linda Blair in The Exorcist, you know?), right before getting off the tube. It was 11 pm, our plane had had a damn 3-hour delay and I was exhausted. But how wonderful, the following morning, catch a red double decker and explore, for the first time, the magic mess of Portobello Road.
*

Milan, a city you may not expect

Imagine a woman. A secretive woman. Someone so busy she has no time for make up, someone who doesn't dress up but simply wears grey suits. She's the kind of woman who too often forgets to camouflage her undereye circles, and she works too hard, too much and doesn't sleep. And in spite of that, just look at her, she's beautiful. Her eyes glimmer, her lips smile. It's a matter of details revealing a subtle charm. Can you picture that?
Ok. Then imagine this woman as she were a city, and you will see white spires popping out, a golden figure standing on the highest pinnacle, and below that a web-like group of streets, set in a huge plain crowned by mountains. That is. Milan.
*
Immaginate una donna. Riservata, sobria. Indaffarata. Particolari. Microscopici a volte. Ma rivelatori di un fascino magnetico. Fatto?
Bene. E avrete Milano.

Discovering UK: an afternoon in Windsor

Today I meant writing something else and I've already started preparing a post about my home town, where I was last week on a short holiday. But unfortunately I haven't finish, yet. The thing is: today it was sunny and the weather was to good to stay at home. Plus, a friend of ours had a rental car for the day, it would have been a waste not to go somewhere. So, we ended up in Windsor, where there's probably the most famous official residence of the British Royal Family after Buckingham Palace.
*
Insomma, siamo finiti a Windsor.

Discovering UK: a walk to Sonning

The weather forecast's promising windy and stormy days. By the way, it's already getting colder and yesterday we had: rain, hailstorm, sun, clouds, rain again, sun, rain, sun and cold blasts. Never getting bored. But spring is already in the air, with magnolias and cherry trees blossoming all around.
You know when in Mary Poppins they all jump into the chalk drawing? Well, that's exactly what it felt like when last week we walked to Sonning, enjoying the warmth of an incredible bright, cloudless 16-degrees Sunday.
*

Discovering UK: an outing to Cotswolds

The Cotswolds were something we missed last summer (btw, you can read about our August trip here, here and here). Not enough time to go everywhere we would have liked to. Therefore we saved them for a weekend outing which is what we did last week.
*
