The lives of others

Sorting donations at the charity shop is sometimes a long journey through others' lives, especially when you need to sort many boxes from the same donor. Because you can find an entire world in there. It's like being a detective investigating hints and evidences: the titles and recurring subjects, the things used as bookmarks, greeting cards and old letters hidden between pages.

A couple of things about volunteering at BHF shop

After my degree, hadn't I become a copy-editor, I'd probably have sought a job in a bookshop. That's why, among the whole lot of charity shops here in Reading, I ended up volunteering at BHF Books & Music and I love every minute spent in there.

Ode to the e-ebook

When first e-books appeared, I was among those claiming they would never surrender to those geeky stuff. Claiming they loved books too much to indulge on cold impersonal digital screens. Where the warmth and scent of paper? Where the subtle, arousing pleasure given by slowly browsing printed pages? Where the excitement of enter a book shop, touch covers, reading inside flaps and choose what will end up on my bedside table?
*

Have you ever been in Camden Town?

First impression you have when you get in Camden Town is you've been suddenly teleported in a kind of freak world where everything's possible. Where else can you find giant shoes or planes hanging on front of buildings?
*

Discovering UK: a day in Brecon Beacon

The last August, MyFairEngineer and I spent two weeks travelling around in the Southern UK. Routard and camera in my bag, a rented car and a UK map, we decided where to go to on the spur of the moment, improvising according to the weather, the book guide, the map and our inspiration. That's how we got into Breacon Beacon.
