Oxford, where spires dream

Old and young, quiet and lively, undoubtedly English and definitely international. Tourism and everyday life. Academics and workers. Whether you go to Oxford for a couple of hours or for a few days, you get this feeling of palpable opposites merging together. That's quite unavoidable. And that's for sure its charm.

Vecchia e giovane, quieta e vivace, indubbiamente inglese e decisamente internazionale. E ancora, turismo e vita di tutti i giorni. Accademici e operai. Che andiate a Oxford per un paio d'ore o un paio di giorni, non potete evitare questa sensazione di opposti che si mescolano insieme. Che poi è il segreto del suo fascino.

Discovering UK: an afternoon in Windsor

Today I meant writing something else and I've already started preparing a post about my home town, where I was last week on a short holiday. But unfortunately I haven't finish, yet. The thing is: today it was sunny and the weather was to good to stay at home. Plus, a friend of ours had a rental car for the day, it would have been a waste not to go somewhere. So, we ended up in Windsor, where there's probably the most famous official residence of the British Royal Family after Buckingham Palace.

Nelle mie intenzioni il post di oggi doveva essere un altro e infatti avevo già iniziato a preparare un lungo articolo su Milano, la mia città, essendoci stata settimana scorsa per una breve vacanza. Solo che purtroppo non l'ho finito. Il fatto è che oggi c'era un tempo troppo bello per stare in casa davanti al computer. Oltretutto un amico aveva un'auto a noleggio per la giornata e sarebbe stato uno spreco non approfittarne. Insomma, siamo finiti a Windsor. Sì, esattamente lì, dove c'è la più famosa residenza ufficiale della famiglia reale inglese (che non a caso fa Windsor di cognome).

Discovering UK: a walk to Sonning

The weather forecast's promising windy and stormy days. By the way, it's already getting colder and yesterday we had: rain, hailstorm, sun, clouds, rain again, sun, rain, sun and cold blasts. Never getting bored. But spring is already in the air, with magnolias and cherry trees blossoming all around.

You know when in Mary Poppins they all jump into the chalk drawing? Well, that's exactly what it felt like when last week we walked to Sonning, enjoying the warmth of an incredible bright, cloudless 16-degrees Sunday.

Le previsioni del tempo promettono giorni di vento e tempesta. Peraltro, le temperature si sono già abbassate e ieri, nell'ordine, abbiamo avuto: pioggia, grandine, sole, nuvole, ancora pioggia, sole, pioggerellina con nuvola di Fantozzi, sole e folate di aria gelida. Ché non ci vogliamo annoiare. Però, via, la primavera ormai è qui, con magnolie e ciliegi finalmente in fiore.

Avete presente quando in Mary Poppins saltano tutti nel disegno di gesso sul marciapiede? Ecco, è proprio così che ci siamo sentiti la scorsa settimana camminando verso Sonning nel tepore di un'incredibile domenica luminosa e senza nuvole, accarezzati da 16 meravigliosi gradi centigradi.

First impression you have when you get in Camden Town is you've been suddenly teleported in a kind of freak world where everything's possible. Where else can you find giant shoes or planes hanging on front of buildings?

Autumn in London

Autumn's arrived, it's on the news. Chilly, windy, stormy sometimes. Saint Jude hit Britain a couple of weeks ago. Then Halloween and last week, on the 5th of November, the Bonfire Night. Which meant a whole week of fireworks (nice, at first, annoying after a while).
